Pros and Cons of Switching to Database Managed Services

The term is widely used and covers so many things simultaneously, so it is hard to figure out what it means exactly. Do managed services include database administration only or do they also cover installation, upgrades and migration to other servers? Are database managed services always 24/7 or are there any other options? Do DBMS involve routine maintenance procedures or can they also handle critical issues? There are literally dozens of questions! Reporting? Custom service? Performance tuning and bottle-neck analysis? Too bad, each database managed service provider answers these questions differently, in its own way.

SQL Server SSIS: ReplaceNull

One of widespread problems in SSIS packages is to replace NULL values with some specific value. Unfortunately, before it was not a simple task as Integration Services didn’t have the operator similar to ISNULL () in T-SQL. To be more exact, there was such an operator, but it works in a slightly different way.

SQL Server 2014: ONLINE operation on a single partition of partitioned object

Here I continue a series of articles devoted to new options in SQL Server 2014. Today let's review another useful operation - ONLINE rebuilding some partitions of partitioned objects (tables or indexes).First let me remind you that some versions of SQL Server (Enterprise, Evaluation, Developer) allow you to perform a number of operations in ONLINE mode. The main advantage of this mode is that we can create / change index and keep on working with the data (including changing these data) at the same time. This happens due to the fact that schema lock (Sch-M) is not retained throughout creation / changing process. Here you can find a more complete list of options supported by different versions:

SQL Server Enterprise Edition Advanced Scanning

It is widely known that SQL Server Enterprise Edition contains a range of improvements, which under certain conditions allow you to perform operations in a more optimal way in comparison with Standard Edition. One of these improvements is Advanced Scanning, which allows multiple scans to share one physical read from the disk. You can also come across another name of this feature - Merry-go-Round Scan.
